The Valletta Local Council commemorated the 442nd anniversary from the laying of the first stone of the city by Grandmaster Jean Parisot de la Valette on the 28th March 1566 on Friday 28th March 2008.
The commemoration started with the laying of wreaths in front of the memorial of where the first stone is said to have been put by the Local Council and the main institutions and associations of Valletta. Following this commemoration, a thanksgiving mass was said in the Our Lady of Victories Church by Mons. Anton Galea. This mass was attended by representatives of the main institutions and associations of the city and Her Excellency the ambassador for Spain to Malta.
After mass the guests where invited in St. James Cavalier to the bestowment of the title of honorary citizen by Valletta Mayor, Dr Paul Borg Olivier, to Gabriel Caruana and Vicente Burgos of Honorary Citizens of Valletta.
Gabriel Caruana was given this citizenship for to his contribution to the arts and culture of Malta by his artistic works in different media which express the rise, the walk and the conquest of our country through the 20th century. Caruana gave a new dimension to the Maltese Art and evolved the traditional parameters to make him unique artist.
Vicente Burgos was given the citizenship for his commitment and contribution in the field of Culture and the Arts bridging and bringing people together, promoting futher human prosperity through cultural understanding.
