New Year's Eve euro-adoption celebrations in Valletta
Valletta will be the place-to-be this New Year's Eve as the government has plans to turn the capital into a hub of celebration for the adoption of the euro.

The bus terminus outside City Gate and the surrounding grounds will be the site of the countdown clock while the city centre will host more varied and mellow entertainment within the city.

Besides the restaurants and bars in Valletta, representatives of the Eurozone will take over areas in and around the city to provide their own traditional entertainment with the aim to put on a celebration of European identity, The Times has reported.

The plan has been approved by the government. The eurozone members will now be informed of the plan through the embassies and invited to support the event.

The Maltese authorities will only be directly responsible for the countdown area, where celebrations will go on till 1 a.m. However, the whole event will be overseen by a co-ordinating body, which will supervise the artistic direction as well as safety and other logistical issues.

The event will be the second state-organised event connected with New Year's Eve after the millennium celebrations. Previous large-scale events, such as the EU accession celebrations and the Notte Bianca events, have shown there is a thirst for such large-scale celebrations.
