Fondazzjoni Temi Zammit (FTZ) Community Foundation aims at providing people, especially youths a detailed insite of this notorious street. We believe that the best person to provide such insite is George Cini, renowned author of the book ‘Stada Stretta: It-triq li darba xelghet il-Belt’. Through Mr. Cini’s own personal stories, being born and raised in Valletta and through the acquired expertise from his book, this activity is a...imed at recreating the heyday days of Strait Street. This will be achieved by recounting stories and inviting the surviving denizens -musicians, entertainers, barmaids, seamstresses, policemen, owners of bars and lodging houses – which recall the carefree but also often violent atmosphere and some of the more outstanding and outlandish protagonists long since dead.
Accompanying George Cini in this event will be a very important contributor to Strait Street’s history – Farsons Brewery. Being a street striving mainly on the economic activity of bars, alcohol (especially beer) played a significant role in shaping this street. There are still mementos of the role played by Farsons still visible today as advertising drawings on the street’s walls. George Cini describes Strait Street as being practically void of cars except the Farsons Brewery trucks who supplied the street with beer on a daily basis.
The aim of this event is to transport the audience back into time and to feel the authentic vibe of the era. Since Strait Street was an entertainment hub with daily performances and ‘dances’, this activity will also feature performances reminiscent of those times. The event in fact intends to include burlesque dancers (Kabuki Guns Dancers Malta) who through their dancing and with their renowned extravaganza will bring back with a satirical note the dancing and performances of the time. FTZ Community Foundation believes that these performances are very fitting within Strada Stretta’s sensual context and are a true reflection of the mischievous spirit of the street.
We look forward to relive Strada Stretta on the 25th of June 2011.
The event is open to the general public and will be held outdoor infront of the Splendid Guest House, located in Strada Stretta (behind the Main Guard - Valletta).
A once in a lifetime opportunity to mingle with people that worked, lived and socialised in Strada Stretta.
This event is being supported by Cisk Lager, Hopleaf Pale Ale, Blue Label Ale and Lacto Stout and co-organised with Fondazzjoni Temi Zammit and Mr. George Cini, author of "Stada Stretta: It-triq li darba xelghet il-Belt".
